Christmas Craft Fair - December 14th 2019
A bit of history...
It is over thirty years old and it takes a lot of people to get it going. But, when it does get going, it runs like a well-oiled machine, thanks to the energy of many willing hands working for a common goal. I am talking, of course about the North Galiano Christmas Craft Fair.
Started in 1979 by a vibrant community association steered by Alistair Ross, the Fair was called a Bazaar and was titled an “International Ushering in” of Christmas party.
In 1981, despite gale-force winds and high seas, the determined group was able to raise $450.00 for their baking and crafts. Over the years, the Christmas Craft Fair has been themed differently, but always at centre is the homemade family oriented celebration of Christmas. Decorations to the hall have been nothing short of enchanting with lots of hollies and lights, tinsel, imaginative hand-crafted decorations and greenery.
THE THINGS THAT GO THROUGH MY MIND
By Judith Hamilton
I had some time to think about the onrushing Christmas season. (Didn’t we just have July?) Last year’s resolve to begin my shopping/crafting… early in the year has vanished like snow in a frying pan. Now is the time to begin to panic. There are cards to buy, lists to update, presents to purchase, and baking to be done. Have I missed anything? Probably.
Oh, but wait! I can get this whole thing done in no time at all and still enjoy life. So fortunate are we to have the Christmas Craft Fair at the North Galiano Hall on NOVEMBER 9th! This legendary event has been held for 33 years and is always jam-packed with bargains, must-haves and things-of-beauty, not to mention the best sausage rolls and soup and goodies for a hot lunch that can be had. I can get my Christmas baking gifts at the “bakery “ where tender and buttery shortbreads, fruity loaves and fragrant mincemeat tarts line shelves nestling in with nuts and chocolates and jams and chutneys… And it’s all homemade and deliciously decadent.
The Hall is always exquisitely decorated to invoke the spirit and scents of Christmas, and is a treat for the eyes. There are fresh aromatic cedar boughs and holly with lights woven through, and tables laden with amazing crafts by area artists, whose nimble fingers have been busily painting, knitting, crocheting carving, sewing, creating, and quilting things all year.
So, it’s all there. The solution for the procrastinator, for the person who is wanting something special made by hand, the person who hasn’t done any baking yet, or just someone who wants a great lunch amid the ambience of the Hall with friends and a developing Christmas spirit…it is awaiting me and you at the Christmas Craft Fair, November 9. (Now I can return to the fruit fly conflict.)
