It was cool and early that morning in mid-April. Birds sang in the trees around the site and drowsy bees worked over the blossoms on the apple trees. Tents looking like giant mushrooms had sprouted up over tables of books, tools and other miscellaneous goods around the lot.
I made my way to the kitchen and found everything intended for refreshment was done and ready to go out…Smokies, hot dogs, buns, condiments ready to go and coffee was started. How efficient was that! Done by volunteers, those quiet gems without whose efforts events don’t happen. Our North Galiano Volunteer Fire Dep’t) were manning the barbeques and our newest dispatcher was on cash and making sure the condiments were refreshed as needed. “More coffee! More cocoa! We need more buns!”
On a quick tour through the Hall, I saw tables along the outer walls and down the middle, all laden with some kind of goods – china, games, fabric, kitchen equipment, clocks, children’s furniture, antiques, real, and to-be-later. Volunteers had set up everything to be attractive and well displayed.
Outside, people began to gather around the front deck and tension began to build as we waited for the auction action. Finally, the microphone crackled and after words of welcome, the auction was happening! An astonishing array of goods, results of down-sizing, household purging and plain generosity was swiftly and efficiently “SOLD!” to the highest bidder.
Thanks to Paul Leblond for another exciting auction and to the helpers on the deck who kept things moving. After the auction, the doors opened and goods were snatched up by delighted buyers. “Make me an offer” was the mantra with no reasonable price refused. Goods moved quickly and money changed hands.
It was another successful event as they have been in the past. Thanks so much for the volunteers and donations and especially to the guests who came to buy.
The Sale of Modern Antiques is one of the more important moneymakers for the North Hall, but it requires many dozens of volunteer hours to set up, staff the event and take-down and clean-up after. Many willing hands have kept events going so that monies raised can be donated to local causes.
